We are talent sourcing for experienced Safety Case Engineers to join teams flexible working from offices in Harwell, Warrington and Cumbria.

The main purposes of this job are to:

  • Deliver safety assessments and other safety case deliverables to support the Operational Safety Case
  • Provide high quality safety advice to engineers, designers and other stakeholders to support the Operational Safety Case
  • Define and specify the work required to support the Operational Safety Case
  • Progress safety case deliverables through the relevant Technical Governance process steps
  • Effectively communicate the key findings, outputs and conclusions of the Operational Safety Case to a wide range of stakeholders (internal/ external, technical/ non-technical)
  • Ensure that safety assessments and other elements of the Operational Safety Case are delivered to time, cost and quality
  • If required, and as agreed with the Operational Safety Case Lead, the job holder will also provide safety case support to other priorities (e.g. Transport, Site Evaluation)
Roles and Responsibilities

The main purposes of this job are to:

  • Provide high quality safety advice to engineers, designers and other stakeholders to support the Operational Safety Case
  • Define and specify the work required to support the Operational Safety Case
  • Progress safety case deliverables through the relevant Technical Governance process steps
  • Effectively communicate the key findings, outputs and conclusions of the Operational Safety Case to a wide range of stakeholders (internal/ external, technical/ non-technical)
  • Ensure that safety assessments and other elements of the Operational Safety Case are delivered to time, cost and quality
  • Contribute to development of the safety case capability, methodology and guidance
  • Develop their own skills/ experience via Continued Professional Development (CPD) (either as part of a professional institute or independently)
  • Contribute to the training and development of team members, including maintenance of SQEP capability, resilience and succession planning
  • Interface effectively with internal teams (e.g. engineering, waste management, requirements, research, post-closure, transport).
  • Deal responsively, but also proactively, with a range of internal and external stakeholders (e.g. Nuclear Safety and Environmental Committee (NSEC), Independent Oversight/ Independent Assessment (IO/IA))
  • Contribute to regulatory interactions
  • Represent the Programme at national and international fora and events
  • Work collaboratively with other staff and suppliers to ensure good value for money
Experience Required

Essential

  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex safety arguments to a wide range of stakeholders (specialist and non-specialist)
  • Safety case production experience, preferably in UK civil nuclear
  • Degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) subject (combined degrees which incorporate a strong STEM element will also be considered)

Desirable

  • Experience of radiological safety assessment of UK nuclear waste handling, packaging and storage
  • Familiarity with higher activity radioactive wastes, handling/ packaging processes and the related safety issues
  • Ability to present safety case documents to stakeholders (e.g. safety committees, regulators)
  • Experience of Requirements Management, Systems Engineering and the Claims, Arguments, Evidence approach to safety case presentation
  • Experienced in the mentoring, training and development of more junior staff
  • Knowledge of the UK nuclear regulatory context
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution, either with a charter or working towards
